Category: Cisco Video and Media

Description: Manages Cisco Video Distribution Switch fabric configuration and video stream routing.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VDS-MIB?

VDS-MIB defines Virtual Data Source (VDS) extensions to the standard Remote Monitoring (RMON) MIB, letting a device present filtered "virtual" monitoring data sources rather than functioning as a video-distribution product as its short name might suggest. It exposes configuration objects for defining virtual data sources by selecting an underlying physical/logical interface and optionally narrowing the source further by VLAN or address filters. Its monitoring role is primarily to configure which traffic subset a given RMON probe/agent instance analyzes rather than exposing hardware/environmental status directly -- vdsControlIfName/vdsControlIfDescr/vdsControlIfAlias identify the physical interface backing a virtual source, and vdsControlVlanSelIndex/vdsControlAddrSelIndex configure VLAN- or address-based selection criteria (with the associated "Negate" objects inverting the filter). It explicitly extends the IETF RMON MIB (RFC 2819) framework, tying vdsControlParent back to a parent RMON data source. It is typically deployed on switches or RMON-capable network probes where operators want to scope RMON statistics collection to a specific VLAN or address range rather than an entire physical port. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the VDS-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VDS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • extension to the vendor-neutral IETF RMON standard, implemented on switches or RMON-capable network probes rather than tied to one manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would create an entry in vdsControlTable/vdsControlEntry indexed by vdsControlIndex, set vdsControlParent to reference the underlying interface, and populate vdsControlVlanSelIndex/vdsControlAddrSelIndex (with vdsControlVlanSelNegate/vdsControlAddrSelNegate as needed) to scope RMON monitoring to a single VLAN or address range. Checking vdsControlIfDescr/vdsControlIfName/vdsControlIfAlias for that entry lets the operator confirm which physical interface a given virtual data source is actually built on, useful when troubleshooting why RMON statistics for a VLAN look inconsistent with expectations.

What Can Be Monitored

  • virtual data source to physical interface mapping
  • VLAN selection filter for a virtual source
  • address selection filter for a virtual source
  • filter negation (include vs exclude) settings
  • parent data source association
