Description: Manages PPPoE session discovery, authentication, and subscriber statistics on CommWorks/3Com equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is USR-PPPOE-MIB?

USR-PPPoE-MIB is a CommWorks/3Com enterprise MIB for managing PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) session discovery, authentication, and subscriber statistics on their broadband access equipment. It exposes per-interface PPPoE configuration (enable/disable, config file name) along with session counters covering active and total historical sessions, and discovery-phase packet statistics (PADI/PADR requests and rejections). This is chiefly a software/protocol status MIB used to monitor subscriber session health: how many PPPoE sessions are currently active, whether discovery packets are being rejected (indicating authentication or capacity problems), and whether an interface's PPPoE service is administratively enabled. It builds on standard PPPoE (RFC 2516) concepts and complements the broader PPP-related MIBs used on the same subscriber access platform. It is typically deployed on 3Com/CommWorks broadband remote access servers (BRAS) terminating DSL or cable subscriber PPPoE sessions. Engineers can download the USR-PPPOE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in USR-PPPOE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • 3Com/CommWorks broadband remote access server (BRAS)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll usrPPPoENumberSessions against usrPPPoETotalNumberSessions on usrPPPoEInterfaceTable entries to see current versus cumulative subscriber session counts, watching for a sudden drop indicating a mass session failure. Rising usrPPPoENumberPADIRejected or usrPPPoENumberPADRRejected counters would reveal that new subscriber connection attempts are being refused, often due to capacity limits or authentication issues, while usrPPPoEInterfaceEnabled confirms whether the service is administratively active on a given interface.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active PPPoE session count
  • total historical session count
  • PADI requests received/rejected
  • PADR requests received/rejected
  • per-interface PPPoE enable status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using usrPPPoENumberSessions OID:

Select a 3Com/CommWorks broadband remote access server (BRAS) (PPPoE session count/discovery-packet status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type usrPPPoENumberSessions into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of Active PPPoE Sessions. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
