Category: CommWorks/3Com Access Equipment

Description: Manages L2TP tunnel and session parameters for VPN services on CommWorks/3Com equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is USR-L2TP-MIB?

The USR-L2TP-MIB is a private enterprise MIB defined by CommWorks (formerly U.S. Robotics, later part of 3Com) for managing Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) tunnels and sessions that carry PPP-based VPN traffic across IP networks. It exposes tunnel configuration alongside tunnel/session state and traffic/error counters. For hardware/software status monitoring it is used to track tunnel and session uptime, session counts, and negotiation or authentication failures that indicate the health of the VPN concentrator's L2TP software stack. It complements the IETF's standard L2TP and PPP MIB conventions used elsewhere in remote-access management rather than replacing them. It is typically deployed on CommWorks/3Com/USR remote access concentrators and VPN gateways terminating dial-up or broadband L2TP tunnels for ISPs and enterprises. Engineers can download the USR-L2TP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in USR-L2TP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CommWorks/3Com/USR remote access concentrator
  • L2TP VPN gateway

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were supplied for this MIB, so specific table or object names cannot be confirmed here. In general, an admin managing an L2TP VPN concentrator would poll tunnel and session count objects and per-session state to detect tunnels stuck in a non-established state or sessions dropping unexpectedly. Without concrete object names to ground it, a fully specific polling example cannot be honestly constructed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • L2TP tunnel status
  • active session count
  • tunnel establishment failures
  • PPP session state
