Description: Manages Mobile IP home agent, care-of-address bindings, and mobility on CommWorks/3Com equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is USR-MIP-MIB?

USR-MIP-MIB is a MIB (originally U.S. Robotics, later CommWorks/3Com) for managing Mobile IP functionality, specifically the home agent role, care-of-address bindings, and general mobility management on CommWorks/3Com network access equipment. It exposes configuration and state objects related to mobile node registration and home-agent behavior, including at least one ICMP Path MTU Discovery control object (usrMipHaSendICMPforPMTUDiscovery) noted in its revision history. Its monitoring role is software/protocol-status oriented: tracking home-agent registration state and mobility bindings reveals whether roaming mobile nodes are being correctly tracked and whether PMTU discovery behavior is configured appropriately for tunneled traffic. It is built on and depends on the IETF Mobile IP standard (RFC 2002-era protocol) for its core semantics. It is deployed in CommWorks/3Com carrier access equipment supporting Mobile IP services for roaming subscribers. Engineers can download the USR-MIP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in USR-MIP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CommWorks/3Com Mobile IP-capable access equipment

Monitoring Examples

Because sample_objects were empty for this module, no specific table names beyond the noted usrMipHaSendICMPforPMTUDiscovery object can be cited; a realistic scenario, consistent with the module's Mobile IP home-agent role, would involve checking home-agent binding state for a mobile node to confirm its care-of-address registration is current. An admin would also check whether ICMP-based PMTU discovery is enabled via usrMipHaSendICMPforPMTUDiscovery when diagnosing fragmentation issues on tunneled mobile traffic.

What Can Be Monitored

  • mobile node home-agent registration state
  • care-of-address bindings
  • ICMP PMTU discovery setting for Mobile IP tunnels

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using usrMipHaRegReqsIn OID:

Select a CommWorks/3Com Mobile IP-capable access equipment (home-agent registration/mobility-binding status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type usrMipHaRegReqsIn into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the total number of Registration Requests processed by the home agent. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
