What Is UMSLMSENSOR-MIB?

UMSLMSENSOR-MIB is a vendor sensor MIB, associated with IBM-style "iBMPSG" environmental sensor naming conventions, that monitors physical environment parameters, chiefly temperature, for a device's Universal Management/Sensor subsystem. It exposes a temperature sensor table giving each sensor's current reading alongside its nominal reading and normal operating range (min/max), as well as absolute readable limits and measurement resolution/tolerance. This is a clear hardware-environmental monitoring MIB: administrators use it to track temperature-sensor readings against defined normal thresholds, detecting overheating or sensor-fault conditions before they cause a hardware shutdown or damage. It parallels the structure of standard hardware-sensor conventions (similar in spirit to the ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB) though implemented as a vendor-specific extension rather than the IETF standard itself. It is typically deployed within blade servers, chassis, or embedded system controllers where internal temperature must be tracked for thermal management. Engineers can download the UMSLMSENSOR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll iBMPSGTemperatureSensorTable/iBMPSGTemperatureSensorEntry, keyed by iBMPSGTemperatureSensorKeyIndex, to compare iBMPSGTemperatureSensorCurrentReading against iBMPSGTemperatureSensorNormalMax and iBMPSGTemperatureSensorNormalMin. A current reading that exceeds iBMPSGTemperatureSensorNormalMax (or approaches iBMPSGTemperatureSensorMaxReadable) would indicate the component is overheating, while comparing against iBMPSGTemperatureSensorNominalReading and iBMPSGTemperatureSensorTolerance would help distinguish a real thermal event from normal sensor variance.
