Description: Specifies mid-level manager objects developed at TU Braunschweig for use in distributed SNMP management architectures.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TUBS-MLM-MIB?

TUBS-MLM-MIB is an academic/research SNMP module from TU Braunschweig defining a Mid-Level Manager (MLM) architecture, in which an intermediate SNMP entity runs scripts to perform distributed, delegated management tasks on behalf of a top-level manager. It exposes a script repository and execution subsystem: mlmScriptTable/mlmScriptEntry hold script definitions (indexed by mlmScriptIndex, with mlmScriptName, mlmScriptDescr, mlmScriptStorageType, mlmScriptStatus), mlmSourceTable/mlmSourceEntry hold script source content, and mlmLock/mlmNextScript control script scheduling and locking for execution. Its monitoring role is around management-software status rather than hardware: administrators check mlmScriptStatus to confirm a delegated management script is active/valid, and mlmLock/mlmNextScript to see whether the mid-level manager is currently busy executing a script or ready for the next scheduled task, revealing the operational state of the distributed management delegation process itself. As a research MIB it depends on general SNMP RowStatus/StorageType textual conventions (from SNMPv2-TC) for its script and source tables. It would have been deployed in academic/research SNMP management testbeds exploring distributed/hierarchical network management architectures rather than in production commercial networks. Engineers can download the TUBS-MLM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TUBS-MLM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based research MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer; applies to SNMP mid-level manager/proxy systems

Monitoring Examples

An operator (or research testbed) would poll mlmScriptTable/mlmScriptEntry to check mlmScriptStatus and mlmScriptStorageType for a given mlmScriptIndex, confirming a delegated management script is properly stored and active, while mlmLock and mlmNextScript reveal whether the mid-level manager is currently executing a script or idle and ready for the next one -- a script stuck in a non-active mlmScriptStatus would indicate a failed script load or delegation error.

What Can Be Monitored

  • script status (active/valid)
  • script storage type
  • mid-level manager lock state
  • next scheduled script
  • script source content
