Category: WAN and Transport Protocols

Description: Manages trunk port configuration, aggregation membership, and traffic statistics for network switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TRUNK-MIB?

TRUNK-MIB is a vendor MIB module for managing trunk ports on network switches — physical or logical links that aggregate multiple ports (e.g., for link aggregation/EtherChannel-style bundling) to increase bandwidth and provide redundancy between switches. It exposes configuration data (which ports belong to a given trunk group, trunk mode settings) alongside traffic statistics counters for the aggregated link. Its monitoring value centers on interface/link-aggregation health and performance: administrators use it to confirm trunk membership is as expected, check whether all member ports are up and forwarding, and review traffic/error counters on the trunk to spot congestion, member-link failures, or imbalanced load distribution across the aggregate. It commonly complements the standard IF-MIB and, where applicable, IEEE 802.3ad/802.1AX Link Aggregation concepts, since trunk ports are usually also represented as regular interfaces. It is deployed on enterprise and data-center Ethernet switches wherever multiple physical links are bundled between switches or between a switch and server for bandwidth/redundancy. Engineers can download the TRUNK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TRUNK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ethernet switch supporting link aggregation/trunking

Monitoring Examples

No sample object names were supplied for this module; based on its documented scope, an administrator would typically poll a trunk-membership table (mapping trunk group to member ports) and per-trunk traffic-statistics counters to verify all expected member ports are active and to spot a sudden drop in aggregate throughput indicating a failed or removed member link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • trunk group membership
  • trunk port operational status
  • aggregate traffic statistics
  • per-member-link counters
