What Is TOS-SMI?

TOS-SMI is a private enterprise SMI (Structure of Management Information) module for TOPSEC, defining the top-level OID hierarchy and enterprise registration point under which TOPSEC's operating system security product MIBs are organized. As an SMI module it does not itself expose runtime monitoring data -- it provides only the object identifier tree (module identity and organizational branches) that other TOPSEC MIB modules attach to. Because it carries no runtime objects, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status; its purpose is purely structural, enabling downstream TOPSEC MIBs (covering firewall, security, or system status) to register consistently under a common enterprise OID root. It has an implicit dependency on the standard SNMPv2-SMI framework (RFC 2578) from which it derives its enterprise registration mechanism, and loading the TOS-SMI MIB Browser view typically shows only that enterprise OID tree with no leaf objects to poll. It is deployed alongside other TOPSEC-branded security appliance MIBs as a shared naming foundation rather than as a standalone monitored entity.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TOS-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • TOPSEC security-appliance product line, entire range (base enterprise OID registration)

Monitoring Examples

This module is a pure SMI/OID-registration module with no runtime data objects, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe -- an admin would never poll TOS-SMI directly, but would instead poll the actual TOPSEC product MIBs that register their tables underneath the OID branch this module defines.
