Category: Network Monitoring and Statistics, System Logging and Diagnostics

Description: Manages Transition Networks device syslog event logging, severity filtering, and remote server configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TN-SYS-LOG-MIB?

TN-SYS-LOG-MIB is a Transition Networks proprietary module for configuring and monitoring syslog event logging on their switches. It exposes configuration for remote syslog server address, port, and enable state, local logging severity level and mode, the local log file name, and a table of individual logged syslog messages with identifiers. Its monitoring purpose centers on software/operational status: verifying that the device's syslog forwarding is correctly configured and active, and reviewing recent logged messages as a first-line indicator of system events, errors, or state changes occurring on the switch. It has no strong dependency on other standard MIBs beyond general SNMP conventions, functioning as a self-contained logging configuration and message-retrieval module. It is deployed on managed switches where centralized log collection is required for operational monitoring, troubleshooting, and compliance auditing. Engineers can download the TN-SYS-LOG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-SYS-LOG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Transition Networks managed Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll tnSyslogMgmtTable to confirm tnSyslogServerEnable is set and that tnSyslogServerAddr/tnSyslogServerPort point to the correct central log collector, while checking tnSyslogLevel to ensure sufficient severity is being forwarded. Querying tnSyslogMessageTable by tnSyslogMessageId lets an administrator review recent locally buffered messages directly via SNMP; an absence of new message IDs over an extended period despite known device activity would suggest the local logging subsystem has stalled or the local file (tnSyslogLocalFileName) is not being written.

What Can Be Monitored

  • remote syslog server address and port
  • syslog forwarding enable state
  • local logging severity level
  • local log file name
  • recent syslog message entries
