All MIBs › SYNOPTICS-RMON-EXT-MIB
Category: Legacy and Historical, RMON and Traffic Statistics
Description: Extends legacy SynOptics RMON statistics with hub-specific counters and monitoring groups.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SYNOPTICS-RMON-EXT-MIB?
SYNOPTICS-RMON-EXT-MIB is a legacy extension to the standard RMON (Remote Network Monitoring) MIB from SynOptics (later part of Bay Networks/Nortel), adding hub-specific statistics and monitoring groups beyond the base RMON groups. It exposes a generic get-table mechanism (a table of source/index/data triples) used to retrieve extended RMON-style statistics from SynOptics hub hardware. Its role is performance/traffic monitoring rather than classic hardware fault status: it lets a network management station pull additional hub-level counters not covered by standard RMON, useful for diagnosing traffic patterns or segment-level anomalies on legacy SynOptics hubs. It explicitly depends on and extends the IETF standard RMON MIB (RFC 1757/2819 lineage), layering vendor-specific data retrieval on top of that framework. It would have been deployed in networks using SynOptics/Bay Networks Ethernet hubs during the era when RMON-capable hub monitoring was common, and is now largely of historical/legacy interest. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SYNOPTICS-RMON-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYNOPTICS-RMON-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- SynOptics/Bay Networks Ethernet hubs (legacy RMON-capable hub hardware)
Monitoring Examples
An admin would query getTableTable/getTableEntry, using getTableSource and getTableIndex to select a specific extended statistic, then read getTableData to retrieve that hub-specific RMON-extension value. This mechanism would be used to pull a counter not exposed by standard RMON groups, for example a SynOptics-specific segment statistic, to diagnose unusual traffic behavior on a legacy hub segment.
What Can Be Monitored
- extended RMON-style hub statistics
- indexed statistic source identifiers
- retrieved counter/statistic data
