Description: Manages Symmetricom NTP server configuration, stratum, reference clock, and client statistics.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SYMMNTP?
SYMMNTP is the Symmetricom NTP MIB, covering the NTP server functionality of Symmetricom timing appliances, split into status and configuration nodes for the NTP service. It exposes data such as NTP stratum level, reference clock source, and client request/response statistics. Its monitoring emphasis is on software/service status: confirming the NTP daemon's stratum and reference clock are correct and stable, and tracking client statistics to see how many devices depend on it, which matters because a Symmetricom appliance is often deployed specifically as an authoritative time source for an entire network. It is built directly on the IETF NTP protocol (RFC 1305/5905 concepts) as its underlying standard. It is deployed on Symmetricom NTP time-server appliances providing stratum-1/stratum-2 time to network infrastructure, with the SYMMNTP MIB loaded into a browser to inspect its status and configuration nodes.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYMMNTP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Symmetricom NTP time server appliance
Monitoring Examples
No object names were sampled for this module, so specifics are inferred from the module description's status/configuration split. An admin would typically poll the NTP status node for current stratum and reference clock source to confirm the appliance is still synchronized to its upstream (e.g., GPS) reference, since a stratum increase or reference-clock change would indicate the appliance lost its primary time source and failed over to a lower-quality one, and client statistics would reveal whether downstream devices are still successfully querying it.
What Can Be Monitored
- NTP stratum level
- reference clock source
- client request statistics
- synchronization status

RFC description
NTP management MIB by Symmetricom with two main nodes: NTP status and NTP configuration.
Start monitoring Symmetricom NTP time server appliance (stratum/reference-clock/client statistics) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
