Category: Switch Management - General

Description: Defines management objects for switching system components, hardware, and operational state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SWITCHING-SYSTEMS-MIB?

SWITCHING-SYSTEMS-MIB is a Synernetics module defining management objects for switching-system components, covering system identity, hardware characteristics, and operational state of the switch chassis. It exposes system ID/type/name, manufacturer, hardware revision, memory sizing (RAM, flash, NV memory), software revision, build time, and SNMP protocol revision/mode. Its monitoring emphasis is squarely on hardware and software status: confirming the installed hardware revision and available memory/flash capacity, and tracking the running software revision and build time to detect an unexpected or outdated firmware version on the switching system. It functions as a foundational system-identity MIB that other Synernetics product-specific MIBs likely build upon. It is deployed on Synernetics switching systems (legacy enterprise LAN switch/hub products). Engineers can download the SWITCHING-SYSTEMS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SWITCHING-SYSTEMS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Synernetics managed switching system

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls swSysSystemHardwareRevision and swSysSystemSoftwareRevision together to confirm a switch is running the expected firmware for its hardware revision, and checks swSysSystemMemorySize and swSysSystemFlashMemorySize against expected specs. An unexpected swSysSystemBuildTime or software revision mismatch across a fleet of otherwise-identical swSysSystemType devices would reveal a unit that was not upgraded during a fleet-wide firmware rollout.

What Can Be Monitored

  • system ID/type/name
  • hardware revision
  • memory/flash/NV memory size
  • software revision and build time
  • SNMP revision/mode
