Category: Switch Management - D-Link

Description: Manages switch configuration parameters, settings persistence, and device configuration state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SW-CFG-MIB?

SW-CFG-MIB is a vendor-specific (object prefix "nb") private enterprise MIB for managing configuration on a managed Ethernet switch. It exposes switch-level configuration and status data such as the MAC address table indexed by VLAN and port, per-port tagging mode and learning status, and overall physical port count limits. As a configuration/status module it supports monitoring hardware health indirectly, for example by comparing the actual detected port count against the maximum supported port count to spot a failed or missing port, and by watching MAC table entries for signs of instability or a forwarding loop. The available material does not show an explicit dependency on other standard MIBs, suggesting it is largely self-contained. It is typically deployed for managing configuration persistence and auditing MAC learning behavior on enterprise access or aggregation switches. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SW-CFG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SW-CFG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NBase-Xyplex managed Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls nbSwMacTable/nbSwMacEntry, keyed by nbSwMacVid and nbSwMacPort, to see which MAC addresses are learned on each port/VLAN and checks nbSwMacMode, nbSwMacTagged, and nbSwMacStatus for each entry. Comparing nbSwPortsActualNumber against nbSwPortsMaxNumber confirms the switch recognizes all installed physical ports; a lower-than-expected actual count can indicate a hardware port failure. An unexpected nbSwMacStatus value or a known MAC address suddenly appearing on a different nbSwMacPort would flag a MAC learning problem or a Layer 2 loop.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC address table entries by port and VLAN
  • MAC entry tag mode and learning status
  • total switch port count
  • actual detected port count
