Category: Alarms and Events

Description: Defines Sun storage agent notifications for storage device events, faults, and status changes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SUNSTORAGEAGENT-NOTIFICATION-MIB?

SUNSTORAGEAGENT-NOTIFICATION-MIB is a Sun Microsystems (Oracle) module defining the SNMP trap notifications emitted by the Sun Storage Agent for storage arrays and grid storage infrastructure. It exposes fault/event data carried in each trap: an alert severity level, the affected device/component identifiers, an event ID/name, and a free-text message, rather than a set of continuously polled counters. Its monitoring emphasis is squarely on hardware fault/status monitoring - alertLevel indicates severity while deviceName/deviceId/componentName/componentId pinpoint exactly which storage device or component (e.g., a disk or enclosure) triggered the event, making it a primary path for storage-hardware fault alerting. It works alongside Sun's broader storage-management enterprise MIB tree (sun.prod.storagent) and is intended to be consumed by any external SNMP trap receiver subscribed to storage alerts. It is deployed on Sun/Oracle StorageTek storage arrays and grid storage systems, where administrators consult the SUNSTORAGEAGENT-NOTIFICATION-MIB MIB to configure centralized hardware alerting through a network management station.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SUNSTORAGEAGENT-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sun/Oracle StorageTek storage array/grid system

Monitoring Examples

When a component fails, the agent sends a trap carrying deviceName, deviceId, componentName, and componentId to identify the failing part, alertLevel to convey severity, and message with human-readable detail. gridId and eventId let an NMS correlate the alert to a specific storage grid and event instance, while eventName gives a readable category such as a disk or enclosure fault. An operator watching for rising alertLevel values across a storage grid would use this MIB to catch degrading array components before they cause data loss.

What Can Be Monitored

  • storage alert severity level
  • affected device and component identifiers
  • alert message text
  • event ID and name
  • storage grid identifier
