Organization: Sun Microsystems Inc.

Last Updated: 2006-09-20

Category: Server and Hardware Management

Description: Extends Sun MIB-II objects with Sun-specific interface, system, and performance management additions.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SUN-MIB2?

SUN-MIB2, despite its "MIB2" name, is a Sun Microsystems (Oracle) enterprise module that defines the base OID structure and hardware-module registry used by Sun's SNMP tooling and Sun Management Center (SunMC) agent infrastructure, rather than a straight extension of standard MIB-II. It exposes both internal SNMP-tooling registration data (a MIB finder/loader/checker and module registry) and hardware module identification data such as module name, localized name, version, and documentation URL. Its monitoring emphasis is software/inventory status - hwVersion and hwName let an operator confirm which hardware module firmware or driver a Sun system currently reports, supporting version-compliance and asset-inventory checks rather than exposing live performance counters. It forms part of the broader Sun enterprise OID tree (under sun.prod and sunsymon) that Sun Management Center and related Sun agents build upon. The SUN-MIB2 MIB is deployed on Sun/Oracle servers running Sun Management Center or related Sun enterprise management agents.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SUN-MIB2. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sun/Oracle server running Sun Management Center (SunMC) agent

Monitoring Examples

hwModuleTable/hwModuleEntry expose per-module hwName, hwI18nName, hwVersion, and hwUrl, letting an operator enumerate which hardware modules a system reports and confirm their firmware/driver versions against an expected baseline. mibModuleRegistry, together with mibFinder/mibLoader/mibChecker, reflects the SNMP agent's own internal bookkeeping of which MIB modules are loaded and validated. A hardware module reporting an unexpected hwVersion would flag a system that hasn't received an expected firmware/driver update.

What Can Be Monitored

  • hardware module name and version
  • hardware module localized name
  • module documentation reference
  • registered/loaded MIB modules
