Category: Cloud and Virtualization, High Availability and Clustering

Description: Manages Oracle/Sun Cluster high-availability configuration, node state, and resource group operations.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SUN-CLUSTER-MIB?

SUN-CLUSTER-MIB is the Oracle/Sun Solaris Cluster management module used to monitor and configure high-availability cluster software running on Solaris servers. It exposes data about cluster identity, quorum voting, node membership, node devices, and private interconnect network addressing across the cluster fabric. The MIB is central to monitoring the software status of the cluster stack itself, including node up/down state, install mode, quorum vote counts, and authentication settings used when adding new nodes, letting an operator quickly see whether the cluster has enough votes to remain quorate. It is a vendor-specific extension built on Sun's enterprise SMI branch rather than a standard IETF MIB, so it depends on the SNMPv2-SMI and Sun enterprise OID tree conventions rather than any independent standard. It is typically deployed in Solaris data-center environments running Oracle/Sun Cluster 3.x for database or application failover, where operators poll it to confirm cluster health before and after node maintenance. Engineers can download the SUN-CLUSTER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SUN-CLUSTER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Oracle/Sun Cluster nodes
  • Solaris high-availability servers

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling nodeTable and nodeConfigTable can see per-node cluster membership and configuration state, cross-referenced against clcCurrentVotes and clsMinVotesRequired to detect if the cluster has dropped below quorum after a node failure. Watching clcInstallMode helps catch a cluster accidentally left in install mode after a maintenance window, which disables normal quorum enforcement. nodeDeviceTable exposes the shared storage devices visible to each node, useful for spotting a node that has lost access to a quorum disk.

What Can Be Monitored

  • cluster quorum votes
  • node membership state
  • install mode status
  • private interconnect addressing
  • node device visibility
  • node authentication settings
