Description: Manages IBM SNMP subagent registration, communication, and operational state at T.J. Watson Research Center.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SUBAGENT-MIB?

SUBAGENT-MIB is an IBM module, developed at the T.J. Watson Research Center, that models SNMP subagents operating under a multiplexed/extensible SNMP agent architecture. It exposes registration, communication, and operational-state data for each subagent attached to the master agent. Its monitoring emphasis is software-status: whether individual subagents are registered and actively communicating with the master agent, which indicates whether the extended MIB functionality each subagent provides is actually available to management stations. It relates to SNMP agent-extension mechanisms such as SMUX (RFC 1227) or similar multiplexing protocols that let multiple software components share a single SNMP agent. It is deployed on IBM systems (e.g., AIX hosts) that use a multiplexed SNMP agent composed of several independent subagents. Engineers can download the SUBAGENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SUBAGENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM AIX server/host running a multiplexed SNMP agent

Monitoring Examples

No concrete object or table names were provided for this module, so specific identifiers can't be cited. Based on its description, an operator would check per-subagent registration and communication-state objects to confirm each expected subagent (and the MIB functionality it implements) is currently attached and responsive to the master agent. A subagent showing as unregistered or non-communicating would mean the MIB data it's supposed to provide is silently missing from SNMP queries even though the master agent itself responds normally.

What Can Be Monitored

  • subagent registration status
  • subagent communication/connectivity state
  • subagent operational status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using saNumber OID:

Select an IBM AIX server/host running a multiplexed SNMP agent (subagent registration/status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type saNumber into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of entries in the saTable. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
