Category: Network Management Infrastructure, SNMP Agent and Subagent

Description: Monitors SNMP subagent supervision state, availability, and health across managed subagent processes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Subagent-Supervision-MIB?

This MIB module defines objects for supervising SNMP subagent processes running under a master agent, an infrastructure-level MIB rather than one tied to a specific network device vendor. It exposes data about the collection of registered subagents: how many are configured, how many are currently active, their identities, and their connection state to the master agent. Its primary monitoring value is software/process health rather than hardware: it lets an operator confirm that expected subagent processes (each typically responsible for a product-specific MIB) are alive, registered, and have not silently disconnected, and it surfaces trap acknowledgment identifiers used to correlate supervision events. Because it manages subagents that implement other product MIBs, it implicitly depends on the AgentX or similar subagent protocol architecture and on the specific product MIBs each subagent serves. It is typically deployed on modular network or telecom platforms where a single SNMP master agent aggregates many independently-developed subagent processes. Engineers can download the Subagent-Supervision-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Subagent-Supervision-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • network devices with modular SNMP master/subagent architecture
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk superVisSubagentTable, keyed by entries such as superVisSubagentName, superVisSubagentSID, and superVisSubagentStatus, to confirm each expected subagent process is registered and reporting a healthy status rather than 'disconnected' or 'unresponsive'. superVisSubagentConnTime shows how long each subagent has been connected, so a value that keeps resetting to zero indicates a subagent that keeps crashing and reconnecting. superVisActiveNumber compared against superVisMaxSubagentNumber gives a quick summary of how full the supervision table is relative to capacity. A drop in superVisActiveNumber without a corresponding drop in expected subagents is a strong signal of a failed software component.

What Can Be Monitored

  • number of active subagents
  • maximum subagent capacity
  • subagent name and session ID
  • subagent connection status
  • subagent connection uptime
  • supervision trap acknowledgment state
