What Is STP-TOPOLOGY-CHANGE-TRAP-MIB?
STP-TOPOLOGY-CHANGE-TRAP-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-adjacent module defining SNMP trap notifications for Spanning Tree Protocol (IEEE 802.1D) events, rather than a vendor-specific product MIB. Its content is limited to notification/trap definitions - specifically topology-change and root-bridge-election events - and it does not define its own set of polled data objects. Its monitoring role is entirely event/fault-oriented: it lets a network management station learn in near real time when a bridge/switch's spanning-tree topology changes or a new root bridge is elected, which is critical software-state information for diagnosing network instability or unintended reconfiguration. It supplements the base STP/bridge MIBs (BRIDGE-MIB, RFC 1493, and related dot1d objects) which define the underlying spanning-tree state that triggers these traps. It is used across enterprise and data-center Ethernet switches running Spanning Tree Protocol wherever an NMS needs alerting on topology instability, as defined in the STP-TOPOLOGY-CHANGE-TRAP-MIB MIB.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in STP-TOPOLOGY-CHANGE-TRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Nortel Networks Centillion LAN switches (legacy, company dissolved 2009)
Monitoring Examples
This module defines notifications rather than a table of polled runtime objects, so there is no object/table data to illustrate a polling scenario - its "data" is the trap PDUs themselves. In practice, a network management station subscribes to receive the topology-change and root-bridge-election traps this MIB defines, and an unexpected flurry of topology-change traps from a switch would indicate a flapping link or a misbehaving port causing repeated STP recalculations. A root-bridge-election trap arriving unexpectedly would flag that the spanning-tree root has shifted, often signaling a failure or misconfiguration on the previous root bridge.
What Can Be Monitored
- STP topology-change events
- root bridge election events
