What Is SONUS-IP-FORWARDING-MIB?

SONUS-IP-FORWARDING-MIB is a vendor-specific module from Sonus Networks (now part of Ribbon Communications) for its softswitch/media gateway platforms, used to manage and inspect the IP routing/forwarding tables that direct signaling and media traffic through the shelf. It exposes a general forwarding group table identifying each routing instance by shelf/slot/instance, plus a CIDR route table listing individual destination/mask/next-hop route entries with type-of-service qualifiers, mirroring the standard IP forwarding table structure. Its monitoring value is largely configuration/software-state visibility - confirming which routes are installed on which shelf/slot/instance and verifying that media/signaling traffic will be forwarded via the intended next hop - rather than hardware health per se, though shelf/slot addressing ties it to the physical chassis. It is modeled closely on the IETF IP-FORWARD-MIB (ipCidrRouteTable) convention, adapted into Sonus's private enterprise tree. It is typically deployed in carrier/service-provider VoIP softswitch and media gateway deployments where Sonus (Ribbon) equipment routes SIP/media traffic and operators need to verify IP routing correctness. Engineers can download the SONUS-IP-FORWARDING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONUS-IP-FORWARDING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sonus Networks (Ribbon Communications) softswitch/media gateway

Monitoring Examples

Polling sonusIpCidrRouteTable, keyed by sonusIpCidrRouteDest and sonusIpCidrRouteMask, lets an operator confirm that traffic destined for a given subnet is being forwarded via the expected sonusIpCidrRouteNextHop, catching misconfigured or missing routes that would blackhole signaling traffic. sonusIpForwardGeneralGroupShelf/Slot/Instance identify which physical shelf and slot a given forwarding table instance belongs to, useful in multi-shelf softswitch deployments. sonusIpCidrRouteNumber gives a quick count of installed routes to detect an unexpectedly empty or bloated routing table.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed IP route entries (destination/mask/next-hop)
  • route count per instance
  • routing instance per shelf/slot
  • route type-of-service setting
