All MIBs › SNMPv2SMI
Organization: IETF
Last Updated: 2001-01-01
Category: Legacy and Compatibility MIBs, SNMP Infrastructure and Standards, Textual Conventions and SMI
Description: Defines IETF SNMPv2 Structure of Management Information base types, macros, and OID tree organization.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SNMPv2SMI?
SNMPv2SMI, an alias/stub for SNMPv2-SMI, is the foundational IETF MIB defining the Structure of Management Information for SNMPv2: the ASN.1 macros (MODULE-IDENTITY, OBJECT-TYPE, NOTIFICATION-TYPE), base data types, and the top of the OID tree (internet, mgmt, enterprises, etc.) that every other MIB module builds on. It does not itself expose device data of any kind; it exposes only the type system and naming conventions that other MIBs use to define their own managed objects. It therefore has no direct monitoring role for hardware or software status, since no uptime, temperature, or counters are defined here; its relevance to monitoring is purely as the grammar every monitorable MIB module is written in. Virtually every other SNMP MIB, standard or vendor, imports from SNMPv2-SMI (or this alias of it) for its basic macros and types, making it the single most depended-upon MIB in the entire ecosystem. It is present, by necessity, in every SNMP MIB compiler and agent toolchain as a foundational/base module rather than something an operator would poll directly. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the SNMPv2SMI RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMPv2SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (foundational SMI), not tied to a specific manufacturer
- any SNMP-managed device (indirectly, via every MIB that imports it)
Monitoring Examples
As a foundational structure-definition module (macros, base types, and OID-tree roots) rather than a managed-object module, it has no runtime data to poll and therefore no monitoring scenario to describe; its only role is being imported by other MIBs that define the actual monitorable objects.
