Category: SNMP Infrastructure and Standards

Description: Defines public SNMP agent objects for system identification, capability reporting, and agent status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SNMP-AGENT-PUBLIC-MIB?

SNMP-AGENT-PUBLIC-MIB is a small, vendor-published "public" convenience MIB defining a common set of SNMP agent identification and capability objects intended to be reused across an agent implementation's product line. It exposes basic agent-level data, namely system/product identification, reported capabilities, and overall agent operational status. Its monitoring relevance is confirming the SNMP agent process itself is alive and correctly identifying its capabilities/status to a manager, which matters when diagnosing a device that stopped responding to SNMP versus a genuine hardware fault. It is typically imported by other, more specific MIBs from the same agent/vendor as a shared base of system-identification objects rather than standing alone. It is deployed wherever an SNMP agent needs a lightweight, common self-identification and status object set, often as a foundation MIB underneath a vendor's fuller management MIB suite, making it a useful SNMP-AGENT-PUBLIC-MIB reference when identifying these shared objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-AGENT-PUBLIC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HPE NonStop servers (formerly Tandem Computers / Compaq NonStop systems)

Monitoring Examples

No object or table names were supplied for this module, so a concrete polling example can't be grounded in real identifiers; typically an operator would poll the agent-status object as a quick liveness check before drilling into the vendor's more detailed hardware/software MIBs, since a non-responsive or error-state agent object usually means the whole SNMP interface is degraded.

What Can Be Monitored

  • agent identification
  • reported agent capabilities
  • agent operational status
