Organization: SnarlSNMP Dynamic Web Application Monitor Developers Group

Last Updated: 2002-12-14

Category: Network Performance Monitoring, Web and Application Monitoring

Description: Monitors SnarlSNMP dynamic web application performance, availability, and response time via SNMP.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SNARLSNMP-MIB?

SNARLSNMP-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB for SnarlSNMP, a software application (not a hardware device) that monitors dynamic web pages/applications and exposes the results via SNMP. It exposes data about the availability, performance, and response time of monitored web applications/pages, turning web-application health checks into SNMP-pollable data. In monitoring terms this MIB is entirely software-status oriented: rather than hardware sensors, it reports whether a monitored page/application responded successfully, how long it took, and whether it is currently considered available or down. It has no apparent dependency on hardware-oriented standard MIBs, functioning instead as a standalone application-monitoring bridge into the SNMP ecosystem. It is typically deployed in IT operations environments that want to fold web-application uptime/response-time checks into an existing SNMP-based network monitoring system, extending SNARLSNMP-MIB SNMP monitoring alongside device health checks for unified alerting.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNARLSNMP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • software application monitoring tool (SnarlSNMP), not a hardware device
  • monitoring station polling web applications via SNMP

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll SnarlSNMP's status objects for a monitored URL to check its current availability state and last-measured response time, alerting if the page becomes unreachable or its response time exceeds an acceptable threshold. No concrete sample objects were provided for this module, so exact object names cannot be confirmed, but the expected pattern is a per-monitored-page table with availability, response-time, and last-check-timestamp columns. A status change to down combined with a spike in response time would indicate the monitored web application is failing or overloaded. This MIB functions purely as an application-availability/performance bridge rather than exposing device hardware data.

What Can Be Monitored
