Category: Routing
Description: Manages RIP SAP (Service Advertising Protocol) entries for IPX network service routing.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RIPSAP?
RIPSAP is a vendor-specific (Novell-associated) MIB for managing RIP and SAP (Service Advertising Protocol) on IPX networks, the routing and service-discovery protocols historically used by Novell NetWare environments. It exposes per-system and per-circuit tables for both RIP (routing) and SAP (service advertisement), including protocol state and counts of malformed or incorrect packets received. Its monitoring focus is software/protocol health: watching ripSysState and sapSysState to confirm the protocols are actively running, and watching ripSysIncorrectPackets/sapSysIncorrectPackets to catch packet-format errors indicating a misbehaving neighbor or protocol version mismatch. It is tied specifically to the IPX protocol stack rather than TCP/IP, so it stands apart from standard IP-centric routing MIBs, though it follows the same general SMI table conventions. It would be deployed on routers or NetWare servers in legacy IPX/SPX networks needing SNMP visibility into RIP/SAP routing and service advertisement behavior. Engineers can download the RIPSAP file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RIPSAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- legacy Novell NetWare/IPX routers and servers
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll ripSysTable/ripSysEntry for ripSysState and ripSysIncorrectPackets per ripSysInstance, and similarly poll sapSysTable/sapSysEntry for sapSysState and sapSysIncorrectPackets, to confirm RIP and SAP are both operating cleanly on a given circuit. A rising ripCircTable circuit error count alongside increasing ripSysIncorrectPackets would point to a malfunctioning IPX router or a protocol version mismatch on that link.
What Can Be Monitored
- RIP protocol state
- SAP protocol state
- incorrect/malformed packet counts
- per-circuit RIP configuration
- IPX routing and service advertisement health
