What Is RFC-1512?
RFC-1512 (the FDDI MIB) is an IETF standards-track MIB module that defines management objects for Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) stations, the token-passing fiber-optic ring LAN technology once common in campus and metro backbones. It exposes objects covering FDDI Station Management (SMT) parameters and physical PORT-level attributes -- port type, connection state, and SMT indexing -- reflecting the layered SMT/MAC/PORT structure of FDDI. It is used to monitor the operational health of FDDI ring hardware: port connection state (fddimibPORTConnectState) reveals whether a station's dual-attached ports are properly inserted into the ring, while port type (fddimibPORTMyType) and SMT index objects help confirm correct station configuration and detect ring insertion/wrap failures. It is a self-contained IETF standard MIB that does not depend on other enterprise MIBs, though it is commonly polled alongside the standard IF-MIB interface table for the same physical port. Network engineers referencing the RFC-1512 RFC would find it deployed on FDDI-capable routers, concentrators, and network interface cards in legacy fiber-ring backbone networks.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC-1512. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- FDDI-capable routers, concentrators, and network interface cards
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll fddimibPORT objects such as fddimibPORTIndex and fddimibPORTSMTIndex to identify each dual-attached station's physical ports, then check fddimibPORTMyType and fddimibPORTConnectState to confirm a port is correctly typed and in the active connect state; a port stuck in a non-active connect state, tracked under fddimibSMT, signals a ring wrap or cabling/insertion fault.
What Can Be Monitored
- FDDI port connect state
- FDDI port type (A/B/S/M)
- SMT station index
- ring insertion status
