What Is RFC1158-MIB?

RFC1158-MIB is an early, now-historical IETF MIB that provided extension objects for network management beyond the original RFC 1156 MIB-I, effectively an interim revision that was later superseded by the RFC 1213 MIB-II standard. It exposes the core system and interfaces groups — system description, object ID, uptime, contact, name, location, services, and the interface table — giving a baseline view of a device's identity and network interfaces. Its monitoring value is foundational: sysUpTime reveals device/agent restarts, sysContact/sysName/sysLocation support inventory and fault-routing, and ifTable/ifEntry exposes per-interface operational and administrative status for hardware connectivity monitoring. It was effectively absorbed into and superseded by RFC 1213 (MIB-II) and is rarely used standalone on modern equipment. It would only be encountered on legacy SNMP agents that predate full MIB-II adoption. Encountering the RFC1158-MIB MIB in the wild today is rare, since virtually all modern SNMP agents implement the superseding MIB-II definitions instead.

Monitoring Examples

A management station polling this MIB would read sysUpTime to detect an unexpected device reboot, and walk ifTable/ifEntry (keyed by ifIndex) to check interface counts via ifNumber and per-interface presence. sysDescr and sysObjectID would be used to identify the device type and firmware, while sysContact/sysName/sysLocation support asset and fault-routing workflows on legacy agents still exposing this early MIB-II variant.
