What Is RDN-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB?

RDN-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB is a Motorola/ARRIS (Redwood/BSR platform, "RDN" prefix) enterprise MIB for MCNS/DOCSIS-compliant Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS), managing upstream cable spectrum analysis, channel scanning, frequency assignment, and cable-modem "flap list" tracking used to detect unstable modems. It exposes configuration data (flap list size limits, aging-out time, insertion time, miss/power-adjustment thresholds, trap enable flags) and operational status (per-CM flap counts and CMTS interface association) to help identify RF plant problems. For hardware/software status monitoring this is fundamentally an RF-performance and fault MIB: it lets a cable operator detect flapping cable modems (repeatedly dropping and reconnecting, often due to poor RF signal, noise, or ingress on the upstream spectrum) before they cause wider service degradation. It is a Motorola/ARRIS proprietary enterprise MIB, deployed alongside the standard DOCSIS CMTS MIBs (e.g. DOCS-IF-MIB) that provide the base cable-modem and channel data it references. It is deployed on Motorola/ARRIS BSR-series CMTS platforms in cable broadband access networks. Engineers can download the RDN-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RDN-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Motorola/ARRIS BSR-series CMTS

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls rdnFlapCmCmtsStatusTable/rdnFlapCmCmtsStatusEntry, indexed by flapCmCmtsIfIndex, checking flapListCurrentSize against flapListMaxSize and comparing against flapListPercentageThreshold to see if a CMTS upstream interface is approaching its flap-list capacity, indicating widespread modem instability on that segment. If flapMissThreshold or flapPowerAdjThreshold values are repeatedly triggered for modems in rdnFlapCmTable, it points to RF plant issues (noise ingress or attenuation) on that upstream requiring a spectrum scan to locate the interference.

What Can Be Monitored

  • cable modem flap counts
  • flap list size vs. threshold
  • upstream miss/power-adjustment thresholds
  • upstream spectrum/channel assignment

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using flapCmInsertionFails OID:

Select a Motorola/ARRIS CMTS device as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type flapCmInsertionFails into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the when the Cable Modem initially ranges, reboots and initially ranges again within the specified insertion time, this counter will increment. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
