Description: Documents Ericsson SmartEdge SNMP agent capabilities for the TACACS+ authentication management MIB on SmartEdge series BRAS.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-TACACS-CAP?
RBN-TACACS-CAP is a vendor-specific AGENT-CAPABILITIES module from Redback Networks/Ericsson that documents which parts of the companion RBN-TACACS-MIB are implemented in different Ericsson SmartEdge SEOS releases, confirming the hint's description of it as a capabilities statement rather than a data-bearing MIB. It contains two AGENT-CAPABILITIES definitions, rbnTacacsCap1 (AOS 6.0.10.x) and rbnTacacsCap2 (SEOS 2.6.5 on the SmartEdge [SE] family, SEOS 6.3.x on the SM Metro Ethernet family, and SEOS 11.1.x on the Smart Service Router [SSR] family), each of which INCLUDES only the rbnTacacsNotifyGroup — meaning these platforms support TACACS+ notification objects but not necessarily every object in the base MIB. As a capabilities file it exposes no pollable OIDs of its own; its value is in telling a MIB-browsing tool or NMS which TACACS+ authentication notifications a given SmartEdge/SSR software release actually supports. It depends entirely on RBN-TACACS-MIB and the RBN-SMI enterprise tree, and it is deployed alongside SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER) and Smart Service Router (SSR) platforms used as BRAS/edge routers; administrators can consult the RBN-TACACS-CAP reference to confirm notification support before enabling TACACS+ trap monitoring on a given SEOS version.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-TACACS-CAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ericsson/Redback SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER) family
- Ericsson SSR (Smart Service Router) family
Monitoring Examples
Before relying on TACACS+ authentication traps for monitoring, an operator checks RBN-TACACS-CAP's rbnTacacsCap2 entry to confirm the SmartEdge's SEOS release includes rbnTacacsNotifyGroup; if the deployed SEOS version predates the PRODUCT-RELEASE listed here, absence of expected TACACS+ notification traps would be explained by the capability gap rather than a configuration fault.
What Can Be Monitored
- TACACS+ notification group support per SEOS release
- agent capability/PRODUCT-RELEASE mapping
- RBN-TACACS-MIB feature coverage
