Description: Documents Ericsson SmartEdge SNMP agent capabilities for the IETF bridge (dot1d) MIB on SmartEdge series BRAS.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-IETF-BRIDGE-CAP?

RBN-IETF-BRIDGE-CAP is an Ericsson AGENT-CAPABILITIES module describing the extent to which SmartEdge/SSR BRAS platforms implement the standard IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 4188) for 802.1D transparent bridging. It contains no data objects itself; it documents which bridge/spanning-tree/forwarding-database groups from the base BRIDGE-MIB are actually populated on a given SEOS software release. Its use is to tell monitoring tools which bridging status data (port states, forwarding table entries, spanning tree topology) can reliably be polled on this hardware/software combination, i.e. what layer-2 configuration and fault information is exposed. It has a direct, explicit dependency on the IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 4188), of which it is a capabilities statement. It is deployed as accompanying documentation for the SNMP agent on SmartEdge MSER, SM, and SSR product families to guide compliant polling. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RBN-IETF-BRIDGE-CAP file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-IETF-BRIDGE-CAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson/Redback SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER)
  • SmartEdge Metro Ethernet (SM) platform
  • Smart Service Router (SSR)

Monitoring Examples

With no sample_objects listed, there are no local OBJECT-TYPEs; an operator instead uses the capabilities clause to confirm support for BRIDGE-MIB groups such as dot1dBasePortTable or dot1dStpPortTable before polling those tables on a SmartEdge router to check spanning-tree port state or bridge forwarding entries. This lets an NMS avoid querying unsupported branches and instead focus polling on the confirmed bridging groups for that SEOS version.

What Can Be Monitored

  • bridge/spanning-tree group support
  • bridge port state visibility
  • forwarding database group conformance
