Description: Documents Ericsson SmartEdge SNMP agent capabilities for the IETF ITU Alarm MIB on SmartEdge series BRAS.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-IETF-ITU-ALARM-CAP?
RBN-IETF-ITU-ALARM-CAP is an Ericsson AGENT-CAPABILITIES module describing SmartEdge/SSR BRAS support for the IETF ITU Alarm MIB (RFC 3877), a standards-based framework for representing generic equipment and network alarms. It defines no objects itself, only documenting which alarm-reporting groups (alarm model, alarm status, perceived severity) the SmartEdge SNMP agent implements. Its monitoring relevance is central to fault management: it indicates whether a device can report standardized alarm/fault conditions such as hardware faults, environmental alarms, and other equipment problems through the ITU alarm framework rather than proprietary traps. It is explicitly a capabilities statement for the IETF ITU-ALARM-MIB (RFC 3877). It is deployed as reference documentation guiding fault-management integration for SmartEdge MSER, SM, and SSR platforms, and the RBN-IETF-ITU-ALARM-CAP MIB itself contains no pollable objects beyond these capability statements.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-IETF-ITU-ALARM-CAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ericsson/Redback SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER)
- SmartEdge Metro Ethernet (SM) platform
- Smart Service Router (SSR)
Monitoring Examples
With sample_objects empty, there is nothing to poll from this module directly; instead an integrator checks this capabilities statement to confirm support for alarm-model objects such as alarmActiveTable or alarmModelTable in the base ITU-ALARM-MIB before relying on them to detect standardized equipment alarms (e.g. a card failure or environmental fault) raised on a SmartEdge chassis. Confirming conformance here lets an NMS decide whether to use the ITU alarm framework or fall back to proprietary Ericsson traps for fault detection.
What Can Be Monitored
- ITU alarm group support
- standardized equipment alarm reporting
- alarm severity/status conformance
