What Is RBN-ATM-PVC-OAM-MIB?

RBN-ATM-PVC-OAM-MIB is a Redback Networks enterprise MIB (Redback's product line was later folded into Ericsson's SmartEdge platforms) for monitoring ATM Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC) OAM — Operation, Administration and Maintenance — functionality based on F5 end-to-end loopback/continuity-check cells. It exposes a per-PVC status table keyed by slot, port, VPI and VCI, reporting the current OAM state of each circuit, alongside the module's standard notification, object, and conformance groupings. Its primary monitoring value is fault detection at the circuit level: the OAM state reveals whether a PVC's remote-end connectivity has failed (loss of the F5 heartbeat), which the system uses to automatically bring the PVC down — a direct feed for detecting link failures rather than chassis hardware health. It builds on standard ATM PVC and ITU-T F5 OAM loopback concepts layered onto Redback's proprietary slot/port/VPI/VCI addressing scheme. It is deployed on Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge broadband aggregation routers carrying ATM-based DSL or leased-line access circuits, where RBN-ATM-PVC-OAM-MIB SNMP monitoring flags F5 OAM loopback failures at the individual PVC level.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-ATM-PVC-OAM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redback SmartEdge (Ericsson) broadband/ATM aggregation router

Monitoring Examples

An operator polling rbnAtmPvcOamStatusTable (indexed by rbnAtmPvcOamStatusSlot/Port/Vpi/Vci) can see rbnAtmPvcOamStatusState transition from up to down for a specific circuit, indicating the remote end has stopped responding to F5 OAM loopback cells and the PVC has been automatically taken down. This lets the admin localize a failure to a specific slot/port/VPI/VCI combination rather than the whole ATM interface and correlate it with subscriber-reported outages on that circuit.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-PVC OAM operational state
  • PVC identified by slot/port/VPI/VCI
  • OAM loopback/continuity-check failures

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnAtmPvcOamStatusState OID:

Select a Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge router (ATM PVC F5 OAM monitoring) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnAtmPvcOamStatusState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The state of the ATM PVC OAM function on a given ATM PVC. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'oamUp', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
