Category: QoS and Traffic Management

Description: Defines IETF RAP WG IEEE 802 QoS policy information base for CoS, 802.1p priority, and bridging policy enforcement.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is QOS-POLICY-802-PIB?

QOS-POLICY-802-PIB is an IETF standards-track Policy Information Base (PIB), developed by the RAP (Resource Allocation Protocol) Working Group, that defines policy rule classes for Quality of Service enforcement on IEEE 802-based (Ethernet) networks. Rather than exposing live device telemetry, it defines configuration/policy objects such as DSCP-to-802.1p and 802.1p-to-DSCP mapping tables and domain configuration objects that a policy server pushes down to enforcement points via COPS-PR. It is used to verify software/configuration correctness of QoS enforcement, specifically that DSCP and CoS priority mappings are set up as intended, rather than to monitor hardware health or performance counters. As a PIB it explicitly depends on the COPS-PR policy provisioning framework and the broader IETF differentiated services/802.1p standards it maps between. It is typically deployed in policy-based networking environments where a central Policy Decision Point provisions QoS mapping rules onto 802-based switches acting as Policy Enforcement Points, per the QOS-POLICY-802-PIB RFC that defines this framework.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in QOS-POLICY-802-PIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based PIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer; applies to IEEE 802 (Ethernet) switches acting as COPS-PR policy enforcement points

Monitoring Examples

An operator or policy management system would inspect qos802DscpMappingTable (via qos802DscpMappingId) to confirm that qos802DscpMappingDscp values map correctly to qos802DscpMapping802Cos priorities, and the reverse qos802CosToDscpTable to verify qos802CosToDscpCos maps to the intended qos802CosToDscpDscp value. A mismatch here would indicate mis-provisioned QoS policy causing traffic to receive the wrong forwarding priority.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DSCP-to-802.1p CoS mapping entries
  • 802.1p CoS-to-DSCP mapping entries
  • QoS policy domain configuration
  • policy rule storage type and row status
