Category: Storage

Description: Monitors blade storage node status, capacity, and health within Panasas parallel file system clusters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PANASAS-BLADESET-MIB-V1?

PANASAS-BLADESET-MIB-V1 is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Panasas for managing "bladesets" (groups of storage blades) within Panasas' parallel/scale-out file system storage clusters, used in HPC and large-scale storage environments. It exposes capacity and inventory data - total, used, reserved, and available capacity per blade set, blade counts, and spare-blade availability. This is squarely a hardware/storage health monitoring MIB: it lets operators track available spare blades versus requested spares (a proxy for redundancy/failure headroom), overall capacity utilization, and blade-set-level status, which are key indicators of storage hardware health and impending capacity or redundancy problems. It is a self-contained vendor MIB with no explicit dependency on IETF standard MIBs beyond basic SNMP structure. Typical deployment context is HPC clusters and large storage/compute environments where Panasas ActiveStor systems provide high-performance shared storage. Engineers can download the PANASAS-BLADESET-MIB-V1 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PANASAS-BLADESET-MIB-V1. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Panasas ActiveStor storage blade/bladeset cluster node

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll panBSetAvailSpares against panBSetRequestedSpares in panBSetTable/panBSetEntry to detect when a bladeset has fewer spare blades than required, signaling reduced fault tolerance after a blade failure. Tracking panBSetUsedCapacity versus panBSetTotalCapacity and panBSetAvailableCapacity over time reveals approaching capacity exhaustion. A drop in panBSetNumBlades from its expected value would indicate a blade has gone offline or been removed from the set.

What Can Be Monitored

  • number of blades in a bladeset
  • available spare blades
  • requested spare blades
  • total capacity
  • reserved capacity
  • used/available capacity
