Category: Testing and Diagnostics
Description: Defines SNMP objects and traps used by the Observium open-source network monitoring platform for custom polling.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is OBSERVIUM-MIB?
OBSERVIUM-MIB is a vendor-neutral MIB defined by Observium, an open-source/commercial network monitoring platform, used to expose custom host and system data for polling by Observium itself or any other SNMP-based NMS, placing it in the general server/host monitoring technology area rather than a specific networking hardware vendor. It exposes host information such as the Linux distribution and version running on the monitored system, along with CPU usage data, functioning as a lightweight custom-agent MIB comparable in spirit to Net-SNMP's extensible agent objects. Its monitoring emphasis is explicitly software/system status: obsLinuxDistro identifies the OS distribution and version for inventory purposes, while obsCPUUsage exposes current CPU load, letting an NMS detect a host under sustained high CPU utilization or track which OS versions are deployed across a fleet of Linux servers. It is meant to be layered on top of standard host-resource MIBs (such as HOST-RESOURCES-MIB and UCD-SNMP-MIB) that a Net-SNMP agent typically also exposes, supplementing rather than replacing them. It is deployed on Linux servers running an SNMP agent configured with this custom MIB extension so that Observium (or another SNMP poller) can collect distro identity and CPU data alongside standard system metrics. Engineers can download the OBSERVIUM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OBSERVIUM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Linux server (any distribution) running an SNMP agent
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll obsCPUUsage under obsHostInfo/obsObjects to track a Linux server's current CPU load over time, flagging an anomaly if usage spikes and stays elevated, indicating a runaway process or resource contention. Checking obsLinuxDistro provides quick inventory confirmation of which Linux distribution and version a given host is running, useful when auditing a fleet of servers for patching or compatibility purposes. Both objects are designed to be lightweight additions polled alongside standard SNMP host metrics rather than a full replacement for HOST-RESOURCES-MIB style monitoring.
What Can Be Monitored
- CPU usage
- Linux distribution and version
- host system identification
