Category: Testing and Diagnostics

Description: Defines test notification objects used to verify SNMP trap delivery and notification infrastructure.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NOTIFICATION-TEST-MIB?

NOTIFICATION-TEST-MIB is a small, vendor-neutral utility MIB whose sole purpose is to define test notification objects used to verify that SNMP trap/notification delivery and an NMS's notification infrastructure are working correctly, rather than to describe any real device or technology area. It exposes a notifications registration subtree (demonotifs) containing one or more test trap definitions with no associated operational data objects. Because it is purely a test/diagnostic aid, it has no role in monitoring actual hardware or software status such as uptime, temperature, or CPU load; its only function is to generate a known, predictable trap that confirms the trap-receiving pipeline (agent to manager) is functioning end-to-end. It has no dependency on other MIBs beyond the standard SNMP notification framework (SNMPv2-CONF/SNMPv2-TM). It is typically used during initial NMS setup or SNMP trap-path troubleshooting on any SNMP-capable device or test harness, not tied to a specific vendor's production equipment. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the NOTIFICATION-TEST-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NOTIFICATION-TEST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based test MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer or device; usable on any SNMP agent for trap-path testing

Monitoring Examples

An administrator setting up a new SNMP trap receiver would trigger the test notification defined under demonotifs and confirm it arrives at the NMS as expected, validating that firewall rules, trap community/credentials, and the receiver's listener are correctly configured before relying on real device traps for alerting.
