Category: Nortel Passport WAN

Description: Manages system time, NTP synchronization, and clock configuration on Nortel MsCarrier Passport nodes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-TimeMIB?

This MIB module manages system time configuration and network-time synchronization on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switch nodes. It exposes the current network time (mscTimeNetworkTime), synchronization status and source (mscTimeSyncStatus, mscTimeSyncSource), and time-server configuration, alongside standard row-status/provisioning objects for each time instance. Administrators use this MIB to directly monitor whether the switch's clock is properly synchronized — checking mscTimeSyncStatus to confirm sync is achieved and mscTimeSyncSource to see which server it is locked to — since clock drift or loss of sync can cause timestamp mismatches in logs, traces, and alarms across the node. It follows the standard MsCarrier Passport component-identity/row-status conventions and depends conceptually on network time synchronization protocol concepts. It is deployed on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switches to keep node time consistent with a network time reference for accurate event correlation. Engineers can download the Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-TimeMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-TimeMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mscTimeOperTable/mscTimeOperEntry to read mscTimeSyncStatus and mscTimeSyncSource for a time instance identified by mscTimeIndex, confirming the switch is synchronized to its intended mscTimeServer. If mscTimeSyncStatus reports an unsynchronized or free-running state, that indicates loss of contact with the time server, risking clock drift that skews trace and alarm timestamps.

What Can Be Monitored

  • network time value
  • synchronization status
  • synchronization source
  • configured time server
  • row status of time entries
