What Is NSS324-MIB?

NSS324-MIB is a Cisco Small Business vendor MIB for the NSS324 network-attached storage (NAS) appliance, covering small-business file storage and network connectivity. It exposes standard interface statistics (packet counts and errors per network interface) alongside hard disk drive inventory data, indexed per disk in the unit. This is squarely a hardware status monitoring module: it lets administrators check network interface health via packet/error counters and, more importantly, monitor the physical disk drives in the NAS for presence and index-based identification, which is essential for catching a failed or missing drive in the storage array. The interface table objects (ifNumber, ifEntry, ifIndex, ifDescr) closely mirror the standard IF-MIB structure, indicating this module reuses or parallels that well-known standard rather than being fully independent. It is typically deployed in small-business environments using the Cisco NSS324 as a shared file server/NAS. Engineers can download the NSS324-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NSS324-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Small Business NSS324 NAS appliance

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll systemIfTable (via ifEntry, keyed by ifIndex and described by ifDescr) to check ifPacketsReceived, ifPacketsSent, and ifErrorPackets for the NAS's network interfaces, and would walk systemHdTable (via hdEntry, keyed by hdIndex) using hdNumber to enumerate the installed hard disks. A disk index disappearing from hdNumber/systemHdTable between polls, or a spike in ifErrorPackets, would reveal a failed drive or a degrading network connection on the NAS. These objects are drawn directly from the sample objects provided for this MIB.

What Can Be Monitored

  • network interface packet counters
  • interface error packets
  • installed hard disk inventory

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using systemUptime OID:

Select a Cisco Small Business NSS324 NAS appliance as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type systemUptime into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The amount of time since this host was last initialized. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a TimeTicks-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is unexpectedly low (e.g. under 10 minutes), since that indicates a recent, possibly unplanned, reboot or restart. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
