What Is NSCHippiSonet-MIB?

NSCHippiSonet-MIB is a vendor MIB from Network Systems Corporation (NSC) covering HIPPI-over-SONET framing on NSC's high-performance channel/network switches, a technology used to carry HIPPI (High-Performance Parallel Interface) traffic over SONET optical links. It defines configuration objects for framing parameters alongside error counters that track transmission problems on the HIPPI/SONET interface. Its monitoring focus is interface/link health: tracking framing and transmission error counts lets operators detect physical-layer degradation or misconfiguration on the SONET link carrying HIPPI traffic, which would otherwise silently degrade high-speed data transfers. It likely depends on standard SONET/IF-MIB interface conventions for indexing the underlying physical interface. It was deployed in legacy high-performance computing/supercomputer-center networks where HIPPI channels needed to be extended over SONET WAN links. Engineers can download the NSCHippiSonet-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NSCHippiSonet-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NSC (Network Systems Corporation) HIPPI/SONET switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls the HIPPI-over-SONET error-counter objects for a given interface to check for framing errors or loss-of-frame events; a rising error count accompanying degraded throughput on a HIPPI channel indicates a failing SONET transceiver or fiber link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • HIPPI-over-SONET framing configuration
  • framing/transmission error counters
  • interface link status
