Category: Hardware Inventory, Products/Registration

Description: Specifies hardware unit type identifiers shared across Nokia's platform hardware inventory MIB modules.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NOKIA-UNITTYPES-MIB?

NOKIA-UNITTYPES-MIB defines the enumerated OID values identifying the different types of circuit cards (hardware units) used across Nokia telecom transmission equipment. It belongs to the Nokia hardware-inventory/transmission technology area. Rather than exposing counters, it provides a standardized vocabulary of unit-type identifiers, covering slot and backplane designations as well as specific card types such as STM-1 electrical and single-mode optical interface cards, that other Nokia hardware-inventory or fault MIBs reference. Its role in monitoring hardware status is indirect but important: it lets management systems interpret which physical card type occupies a given slot when polling inventory or fault tables, distinguishing an STM-1 electrical card from an STM-1 optical card during a hardware audit or fault report. It is a dependency consumed by other Nokia platform MIBs, such as hardware inventory or alarm MIBs, rather than a standalone data source itself. It is typically deployed as a supporting module in Nokia SDH/transmission network element management systems. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the NOKIA-UNITTYPES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NOKIA-UNITTYPES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia SDH/transmission network element
  • Nokia circuit card / interface module

Monitoring Examples

A management application referencing a Nokia hardware inventory table would use values like ntcHWUnitIanNcaStm1Electrical or ntcHWUnitNcaStm1SingleModeOptical to decode which specific card type is installed in a slot identified by ntcHWSlot, distinguishing it from an unpopulated slot (ntcHWUnitNone) or the backplane itself (ntcHWBackplane). If an inventory poll unexpectedly returns ntcHWUnitAny or ntcHWUnitNone where a card was expected, this flags a missing or unrecognized module. This MIB itself is a type-definition module, so monitoring here means interpreting unit-type codes returned by other Nokia hardware MIBs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed card/unit type
  • slot occupancy status
  • backplane identification
  • STM-1 electrical vs optical card type
