Category: ATM

Description: Monitors Newbridge Networks packet-level traffic statistics on ATM and frame relay interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NNC-PKT-STATISTICS-MIB?

NNC-PKT-STATISTICS-MIB is a Newbridge Networks (later Alcatel) proprietary MIB for performance monitoring of packet-routed traffic over ATM/Frame Relay interfaces, part of the carrier WAN switching product line. It exposes historical performance data organized into current and historical 15-minute interval buckets for packet virtual circuit layer (VCL) statistics, following the RFC 1695 VPL/VCL model and RFC 2233 interval-table conventions. Its use centers on monitoring software/hardware performance counters, tracking per-VCL packet-routing statistics across rolling 15-minute intervals so operators can spot degrading throughput or error trends over time rather than just instantaneous state. It explicitly depends on RFC 1695 (ATM MIB VPL/VCL definitions) and RFC 2233 (interface performance interval tables) for its structure. It is typically deployed on Newbridge/Alcatel ATM/Frame Relay switches in carrier and enterprise WAN environments for capacity planning and SLA verification. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the NNC-PKT-STATISTICS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NNC-PKT-STATISTICS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Newbridge Networks ATM/Frame Relay switch
  • Alcatel WAN switching platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll the PKT VCL 15 Minute Current Table to obtain the in-progress interval's packet statistics for a given virtual channel link, and the PKT VCL 15 Minute Interval Table to retrieve historical 15-minute buckets (with nncDepthOfHistoricalStrata controlling how many intervals, nominally up to 32, are retained) for trend analysis. A sustained rise in packet error or discard counts across successive intervals in these tables would indicate a degrading ATM/Frame Relay circuit needing attention. No object names beyond the two tables and nncDepthOfHistoricalStrata are documented in the source.

What Can Be Monitored

  • packet VCL current-interval statistics
  • packet VCL historical 15-minute statistics
  • number of historical intervals retained
  • packet routing error trends
