Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NMS520-MIB?
NMS520-MIB is not, as its name and 'NMS Communications' vendor label might suggest, a MIB from the telecom vendor NMS Communications -- the module's own copyright header and OID registration ('Copyright 1994 General DataComm Inc.', nested under the dsu subtree imported from DDS-MIB) show it is a General DataComm (GDC) enterprise MIB for the NMS520, a Digital Data Service (DDS) line DSU/CSU unit. The nms520UnitCfgTable augments GDC's SC5520 unit configuration table with NMS520-specific settings such as NMS510 compatibility mode, DTE port type (RS-232/V.35/auto), RTS/CTS delay timing, daisy-chain data rate, firmware level, and front-panel test-switch inhibit/enable controls. A large nms520AlarmData branch defines over 30 alarm conditions (jitter, bipolar violations, frame loss, signal-to-noise ratio, low receive signal, DSR/DTR/DCD/RXD/TXD loss, shorted leads, and more), configured for threshold and hysteresis via nms520AlarmCfgTable, while nms520LineStatsTable reports rolling 1-15 minute DDS line statistics (Tx/Rx level, signal-to-noise ratio, jitter percentage, bipolar-violation and frame-loss counts) and nms520DiagCfgTable/nms520DiagExcTable drive on-demand loopback, self-test, and network-delay diagnostics. It depends on the GDCCMN-MIB and DDS-MIB enterprise trees for its parent OID and SCinstance indexing, and it is deployed on General DataComm NMS520 DSU/CSU units in DDS point-to-point or multipoint circuits, and administrators can download the NMS520-MIB file to monitor and diagnose these legacy DDS lines.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS520-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- General DataComm (GDC) NMS520 DDS DSU/CSU units
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls nms520LineStatsSignalToNoiseRatio and nms520LineStatsBpvCount over the last 1-15 minute interval (nms520LineStatsInterval) to gauge DDS line quality, and checks nms520AlarmCfgThreshold against nms520JitterAlm; a signal-to-noise ratio dropping below its configured threshold alongside rising bipolar-violation counts would indicate a degrading copper DDS circuit needing carrier attention.
What Can Be Monitored
- DDS line jitter, bipolar violation, and frame-loss counts
- signal-to-noise ratio and receive signal level
- DSR/DTR/DCD/RXD/TXD loss alarms
- unit configuration (DTE port type, compatibility mode, firmware level)
- on-demand loopback/self-test diagnostic status

There are 1000 bits/block. Emuns 3 through 10 are write only. The only valid responses to a READ are dataloopOn(2) or dataloopOff(1). This test will terminate after the specified number of blocks have been run. Reading test results via the nms520DiagBitErrors or nms520DiagBlockErrors objects while the test is running will cause the test to terminate prematurely and render the results invalid. Test results should be read only after the test is completed and are available from the master (sc5520) unit. The current Test Status can be obtained by reading the sc5520DiagTestStatus object on the master unit, reading test status on the remote unit may interfere with the diagonostic test pattern and cause errors. This test can also be terminated by seting the nms520DiagTestReset object. |
| INT nms520DiagEndToEndSelftest | 1.3.6.1.4.1.498.8.2.7.1.5 | INTEGER | read-write | To initiate an End to End Selftest(Error Rate Test) SET this object and specifiy a blocksize. Both the remote (nms520) amd master (sc5520) units will go into Selftest. The blocksize indicates the number of blocks the Selftest pattern generator will run. There are 1000 bits/block. Emuns 3 through 10 are write only. The only valid responses to a READ are selftestOn(2) or selftestOff(1). This test will terminate after the specified number of blocks have been run. Reading test results via the nms520DiagBitErrors or nms520DiagBlockErrors objects while the test is running will cause the test to terminate prematurely and render the results invalid. Test results should be read only after the test is completed and are available from both the remote (nms520) and master (sc5520) units. The current Test Status can be obtained by reading the sc5520DiagTestStatus object on the master unit, reading test status on the remote unit may interfere with the diagonostic test patternand cause errors. | INT nms520DiagNetworkDelay | 1.3.6.1.4.1.498.8.2.7.1.6 | INTEGER | read-write | To initiate a Network Delay test SET this object and specifiy runDelayTest. Both the remote (nms520) and master (sc5520) units will go into a test to measure network delay. Emun 3 is write only. The only valid responses to a READ are delayTestOn(2) or delatTestOff(1). This test will terminate after 10 seconds. Reading test results via the nms520DelayTime object while the test is running will cause the test to terminate prematurely and render the results invalid. Test results should be read only after the test is completed and are available from the master (sc5520) unit. The current Test Status can be obtained by reading the sc5520DiagTestStatus object on the master unit, reading test status on the remote unit may interfere with the test and cause errors. This test can not be terminated early once it is started. |
| INT nms520DiagTestStatus | 1.3.6.1.4.1.498.8.2.7.1.7 | INTEGER | read-only | This object gives the current diagonostic test status. noTest indicates that no diagonostic test is currently active. Reading this object while in a diagonostic test involing two units may interfere with a selftest pattern and invalidate the test results. Reading the sc5520DiagTestStatus (master unit) object during dagonostic tests involing two unit will not disrupt the test results. |
| INT nms520DiagExtDataloop | 1.3.6.1.4.1.498.8.2.7.1.8 | INTEGER | read-write | To initiate a Dataloop test with no Selftest SET this object and specifiy external, this will allow the data from the DTE attached to the far end unit (sc5520) to looped back to itself. Emun external(3) is write only. The only valid response to a READ is dataloopOn(2) or dataloopOff(1). To halt this test you must SET the nms520DiagTestReset object. Reading test results via the nms520DiagBitErrors or nms520DiagBlockErrors objects while the test is running will also cause the test to terminate. There are no test results associated with this test. Reading test status on the remote unit via nms520DiagTestStatus may interfere with the diagonostic test pattern generated from the terminal equiptment. |
