Category: Network Management

Description: Monitors NMS Communications system information including hostname, uptime, CPU load, and resource utilization.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NMS-SYS?

NMS-SYS is a legacy proprietary MIB (built on NMS-SMI) reporting system bootstrap identity and internal memory-buffer pool statistics, in the style of a classic Cisco IOS 'show buffers'/'show version' output. Its objects cover ROM ID, last-reload reason, host/domain name, authoritative address, boot host, a ping trigger, free memory, and a large family of buffer-pool counters (element free/max/hit/miss/create counts for small/medium and further buffer classes). As a performance/status MIB it lets an administrator diagnose memory-buffer exhaustion (rising miss counts) and confirm the last reload cause on this legacy device. It is deployed on legacy network equipment implementing this private MIB. Engineers can download the NMS-SYS file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-SYS. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Legacy network equipment (NMS-SMI vendor line)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks nmsbufferSmMiss rising over time to catch a memory-buffer pool nearing exhaustion, and nmswhyReload to confirm the cause of the last reboot on this legacy device.

What Can Be Monitored

  • memory-buffer pool exhaustion and last-reload cause
