Category: Network Management
Description: Monitors operational state and status information for NLS BBN network equipment components.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NLS-BBNSTATE-MIB?
NLS-BBNSTATE-MIB is a MIB associated with BBN (Bolt Beranek and Newman)-derived network equipment (NLS), implementing a generic, ITU-T X.731-style state model for reporting the status of managed hardware units or components. It exposes administrative state, operational state, usage state, procedural status, alarm status, availability status, control status, and standby status objects for each managed unit. Its monitoring value is directly about hardware/component operational health: it tells an operator whether a unit is administratively enabled, operationally up or down, in-service or idle, in an alarm condition, available, or acting as a hot standby, which is exactly the kind of fault/status data used for hardware health monitoring. This state model closely follows ITU-T X.731 / OSI CMIP-derived textual conventions common in telecom network-element management, adapted here for SNMP. It is typically deployed on BBN-derived network infrastructure components or cards requiring standardized state and alarm reporting, as defined in the NLS-BBNSTATE-MIB MIB specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NLS-BBNSTATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- BBN (NLS)-derived network equipment components/units
- vendor-neutral state-reporting model applicable to telecom network elements
Monitoring Examples
unitAdministrativeState and unitOperationalState together reveal whether a given hardware unit is enabled and actually functioning, while unitAlarmStatus flags whether it is currently in an alarm condition. An administrator polling unitAvailabilityStatus and unitStandbyStatus across redundant units could detect a primary unit that has become unavailable and confirm whether its standby partner is ready to take over. A transition of unitOperationalState to 'disabled' combined with an active unitAlarmStatus would clearly indicate a hardware fault requiring attention.
What Can Be Monitored
- unit administrative state
- unit operational state
- unit usage state (in-service/idle)
- unit alarm status
- unit availability status
- unit standby status
