Category: Net-SNMP and Linux, Textual Conventions and Registries
Description: Defines Net-SNMP-specific textual conventions used across other Net-SNMP MIB modules.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring NET-SNMP-TC with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is NET-SNMP-TC?
NET-SNMP-TC is a textual-conventions module belonging to the open-source Net-SNMP agent project, not a vendor hardware MIB in its own right. It exposes no object instances directly; instead it defines shared data types and enumerations (such as an operating-system-family enumeration covering values like hpux9, sunos4, solaris, osf, ultrix, and hpux10) that other Net-SNMP MIB modules import and reuse. Because it carries no runtime counters or status objects itself, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software state on its own — its contribution is indirect, helping modules built on top of it (process tables, disk tables, extend tables, and similar) represent OS/platform identity consistently when reporting software version and host status. Nearly every other Net-SNMP MIB module (e.g., NET-SNMP-AGENT-MIB, NET-SNMP-EXTEND-MIB, UCD-SNMP-MIB) depends on the type definitions in this module. The NET-SNMP-TC MIB is present wherever the Net-SNMP agent (snmpd) runs, i.e., on Linux, BSD, and legacy Unix hosts (HP-UX, SunOS, Solaris, OSF/1, Ultrix) being polled by an SNMP management station.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NET-SNMP-TC. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-adjacent module used only by the Net-SNMP agent, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- Unix/Linux/BSD hosts running Net-SNMP (snmpd)
Monitoring Examples
This module defines enumerations rather than instrumented objects, so there is no per-instance data to poll directly. Its operating-system-family textual convention (with values such as hpux9, sunos4, solaris, osf, ultrix, hpux10) is used by other Net-SNMP tables to report which Unix variant the monitored host is running, so an admin would encounter it indirectly when a value like "solaris" appears in a dependent status object. Since it is a pure type-definition module, there are no runtime objects or traps for it to expose on its own.

RFC description
Net-SNMP textual conventions and data types module; defines reusable SNMP syntax and conventions for Net-SNMP agent implementations.
Start monitoring Unix/Linux/BSD host running Net-SNMP (shared textual conventions) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
