Category: Network Management, SNMP Framework
Description: Defines periodic notification objects enabling net-snmp agents to send scheduled informational traps.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NET-SNMP-PERIODIC-NOTIFY-MIB?
NET-SNMP-PERIODIC-NOTIFY-MIB is a Net-SNMP implementation-specific extension MIB that lets the net-snmp agent (snmpd) emit scheduled, periodic informational SNMP trap notifications carrying arbitrary data payloads, rather than modeling any particular vendor's hardware. It exposes configuration scalars for the notification interval and message numbering, alongside the actual notification/trap definitions and their payload objects. Its principal monitoring use is as a software-level heartbeat mechanism: an NMS can use the periodic trap arrival itself to confirm the agent process is alive, and nsPNotifyMessageNumber sequencing lets it detect gaps caused by dropped or lost notifications rather than reporting any physical sensor data. It builds directly on the standard SNMPv2-TRAP/NOTIFICATION-TYPE mechanisms and the core SNMPv2-MIB conventions used by the Net-SNMP agent. It is typically deployed on Linux/Unix hosts running snmpd where operators want a lightweight scheduled heartbeat trap for NMS keep-alive monitoring. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the NET-SNMP-PERIODIC-NOTIFY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NET-SNMP-PERIODIC-NOTIFY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Linux/Unix host running the Net-SNMP agent (snmpd)
- vendor-neutral extension MIB tied to the Net-SNMP implementation, not a specific hardware manufacturer
Monitoring Examples
An administrator sets nsPNPeriodicTime to define how often the agent should fire a notification, and the NMS watches the resulting nsPNotifyMessageNumber sequence against nsPNotifyMaxMessageNumber for wraparound or gaps. If the sequence number skips values, the receiver infers that one or more periodic notifications were lost in transit or the agent restarted, signaling a monitoring gap that needs investigation. This provides a simple software-heartbeat check independent of any hardware sensor.
What Can Be Monitored
- periodic notification interval
- notification message sequence number
- maximum message number before wraparound
- heartbeat/keepalive trap delivery
