Category: Net-SNMP and Linux
Description: Defines managed objects for monitoring the internal health of the Net-SNMP agent, including logging statistics and internal process metrics.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring NET-SNMP-MONITOR-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is NET-SNMP-MONITOR-MIB?
NET-SNMP-MONITOR-MIB is part of the open-source Net-SNMP agent's own enterprise MIB suite, exposing objects that let the Net-SNMP agent monitor aspects of the host system it runs on — process presence (nsProcess), disk space (nsDisk), file existence/size (nsFile), and log message counts/severities (nsLog) as configured in the agent's snmpd.conf. It's a Net-SNMP-specific module bridging basic OS health checks into SNMP, rather than covering networking hardware. Its core purpose is monitoring host software/OS status: confirming specific processes/services are running, disk partitions have adequate free space, watched files exist/match expected size, and recent log activity/error counts, all classic host-health checks exposed via SNMP rather than vendor router/switch telemetry. It's tightly coupled to the Net-SNMP agent implementation itself (not a general IETF standard) and typically works alongside HOST-RESOURCES-MIB and UCD-SNMP-MIB from the same project for fuller host monitoring. It's deployed on any Linux/Unix server running the Net-SNMP daemon (snmpd) where administrators have configured proc/disk/file/logmatch checks for host-level monitoring. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the NET-SNMP-MONITOR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NET-SNMP-MONITOR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, Net-SNMP-agent-specific module; applies to any Linux/Unix server running snmpd
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll the nsProcess table to confirm a critical daemon (configured via a "proc" directive in snmpd.conf) has at least the minimum expected number of running instances, and check nsDisk entries to verify a monitored filesystem's free space stays above its configured threshold. A missing process entry or an nsDisk entry crossing its minimum-free threshold would trigger an SNMP-visible fault even though these are host-level, not network-hardware, conditions; nsFile and nsLog similarly flag a missing/changed watched file or a spike in matched log lines.
What Can Be Monitored
- monitored process presence/count
- disk free space threshold
- watched file existence/size
- log message match count

RFC description
Net-SNMP system monitoring configuration for processes, disk, files, and logs.
Start monitoring Linux/Unix server running Net-SNMP agent (proc/disk/file/log health checks) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
