Category: Net-SNMP and Linux, Routing Protocols

Description: Defines objects used by the Net-SNMP pass-through and pass-persist extensibility mechanisms, allowing external scripts to handle SNMP requests.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring NET-SNMP-PASS-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is NET-SNMP-PASS-MIB?

NET-SNMP-PASS-MIB is an example/demonstration module distributed with Net-SNMP that illustrates the object types an external script can serve through the agent's pass and pass-persist extensibility mechanisms, nested under the vendor's NET-SNMP-EXAMPLES-MIB tree (netSnmpPassExamples). It defines example scalars covering common SNMP data types — netSnmpPassString (SnmpAdminString), netSnmpPassTimeTicks, netSnmpPassIpAddress, netSnmpPassCounter (fixed at 42), netSnmpPassGauge, and an OBJECT IDENTIFIER scalar netSnmpPassOIDValue — plus a netSnmpPassTable with a single fixed row (netSnmpPassIndex, netSnmpPassInteger, netSnmpPassOID) meant to double as a template for a real pass-persist script. Because it is explicitly documentation-by-example rather than a production monitoring MIB, its usefulness for monitoring lies in validating that a custom pass/pass-persist extension script is wired up correctly and returning the expected data types and OIDs before deploying real custom instrumentation. It depends on the Net-SNMP agent's pass/pass-persist extension configuration (via snmpd.conf) to actually populate these objects from an external script, and it is deployed alongside any Net-SNMP agent (net-snmp.org) used as a monitoring platform on Linux/Unix hosts. Developers building Net-SNMP script extensions can download the NET-SNMP-PASS-MIB file to validate their pass-persist script's output format.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NET-SNMP-PASS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Net-SNMP agent (net-snmp.org), any Linux/Unix host running snmpd

Monitoring Examples

A developer wires up a pass-persist script in snmpd.conf and polls netSnmpPassCounter and netSnmpPassGauge to confirm the script returns the expected fixed value of 42; if the poll instead times out or returns no such object, it indicates the pass-persist script is not registering correctly under the netSnmpPassExamples OID subtree.

What Can Be Monitored

  • example scalar object types (string, timetick, IP address, counter, gauge)
  • example table row for pass-persist template validation
  • custom pass/pass-persist script response correctness
  • OID-valued scalar handling

RFC description

Net-SNMP pass-through MIB for extending agent functionality via external scripts and custom plugins.

Start monitoring Linux/Unix host running Net-SNMP agent (pass/pass-persist extension example) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
