Category: Firewall, Network Management

Description: Controls SNMP trap generation, filtering, and destination configuration on NBS optical networking equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NBS-TRAPCONTROL-MIB?

NBS-TRAPCONTROL-MIB is an NBS Networks optical equipment MIB for controlling which SNMP notifications (traps) are enabled and to which interfaces/ports they apply on the device. It exposes a trap list table enumerating supported traps by their originating MIB, name, description, and OID, alongside a per-interface trap table controlling trap generation on specific ports. Its monitoring relevance is meta-level fault management configuration: rather than reporting hardware state itself, it lets administrators discover which fault/event traps a device supports and enable or scope them per interface, ensuring critical hardware and optical alarms are actually forwarded to the NMS. It naturally depends on and cross-references the other trap-generating MIBs on the platform (identified via nbsTrapListTrapMib and nbsTrapListTrapOID), since it is a control layer over their notifications. It is deployed on NBS optical/transport chassis to tune which alarms reach network management, especially in environments with many ports and selective alerting needs. Engineers can download the NBS-TRAPCONTROL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-TRAPCONTROL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NBS Networks optical transport chassis

Monitoring Examples

An operator inspects nbsTrapListTable/nbsTrapListEntry using nbsTrapListTrapMib and nbsTrapListTrapOID to discover which fault traps (e.g., from an optical or hardware status MIB) the device supports, then adjusts nbsTrapIfTable/nbsTrapIfEntry keyed by nbsTrapIfIndex to enable or disable trap generation for a specific port. This reveals, for instance, that a critical optical-loss trap was disabled on a given interface, explaining why an actual signal-loss event never reached the monitoring station.

What Can Be Monitored

  • supported trap inventory (name, OID, source MIB)
  • per-interface trap enablement
  • trap description/documentation
  • trap generation scope by port
