Organization: NBS

Last Updated: 2008-08-11

Category: Hardware Inventory, Products/Registration

Description: Provides NBS enterprise meta-MIB OID registration and module capability declarations.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NBS-META-MIB?

NBS-META-MIB is a private, self-descriptive registration MIB used internally by NBS (MRV) FDRNIX-based devices to catalog the features and variables exposed by other NBS MIB modules on the system. Rather than exposing hardware or traffic counters directly, it provides a meta-table of feature IDs, families, names, descriptions, units, and types, essentially a machine-readable index of device capabilities. It has limited direct monitoring value for hardware or software health; instead it supports management tools in discovering what a given device instance actually supports, which indirectly aids monitoring by letting NMS software adapt polling to the device's declared feature set. It depends conceptually on the broader family of NBS enterprise MIBs it indexes rather than external standards. It is typically used behind the scenes by NBS/MRV element management systems rather than polled directly by general-purpose monitoring tools. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the NBS-META-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-META-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • MRV/NBS FDRNIX-based network element

Monitoring Examples

A management application would walk metaMibFeatureTable/metaMibFeatureEntry to enumerate metaMibFeatureID, metaMibFeatureFamily, and metaMibFeatureName entries, then cross-reference metaMibVariableTable to determine which SNMP variables correspond to each declared feature. This is used to auto-discover, for example, whether a device supports a particular optical or VLAN feature family before attempting to poll its corresponding operational MIB. Because this is a capability registry rather than a live counter set, monitoring anomalies here would mean unexpected feature entries or missing families rather than performance degradation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • registered feature IDs and families
  • feature descriptions and units
  • declared variable table entries
  • device capability inventory
