Category: MPLS, Protocol Tunneling

Description: Defines multiprotocol label switched path detour and protection reroute objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MP-DETOUR-MIB?

This MIB defines objects for MPLS label-switched-path detour and fast-reroute protection mechanisms, tracking the alternate ('detour') paths used to protect a primary LSP against link or node failure. It exposes per-detour identifiers along with associated observation and detour interface indices/types, discard-point interface information, and the administrative/operational status of the protection path, plus timestamps for configuration and status changes. It is used to monitor the software-level status of MPLS fast-reroute protection, specifically whether a detour path is administratively enabled and operationally up, and when it last changed, which reveals whether traffic-protection failover paths are actually ready to take over if the primary LSP fails. It is closely tied to and dependent on the MPLS-TE/MPLS label-switching MIB framework for the primary LSPs being protected. It is deployed on MPLS-TE-capable routers in service-provider core/backbone networks that use fast-reroute for sub-second failure protection of label-switched paths. Engineers can download the MP-DETOUR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MP-DETOUR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • MPLS-TE-capable router/label switch router (LSR)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls entries keyed by mpDetourID to see the mpDetourIfindex/mpDetourIfType/mpDetourIfNumber identifying the protection interface, and checks mpObservationAdminStatus/mpObservationOperStatus to confirm the associated primary path is being watched. If mpObservationOperStatus shows down while mpDetourConfigChangeTimeStamp is recent, that suggests a detour was just reconfigured in response to a link failure; mpDiscardIfindex/mpDiscardIfType/mpDiscardIfNumber would show where traffic is being discarded if no valid detour is available.

What Can Be Monitored

  • detour path status
  • admin/operational status of protection path
  • protected interface identifiers
  • discard interface
  • configuration/status change timestamps
